Polymer Chemist, San Diego
Position Summary
Serve as the company’s principle polymer chemist, responsible for the synthesis and development of Sirigen polymer materials optimized for application in aqueous media and conjugation to biological molecules (proteins, antibodies, nucleic acids, etc.). The successful candidate will apply their knowledge of polymer science to lead the design and synthesis of alternative backbone structures as well as to improve the polymerization process for existing polymer structures. Key performance metrics include delivery of consistent and defined MW materials (through purification and/or chemistry), increased aqueous solubility, high quantum yields and controlled incorporation of functional sites for subsequent chemistry (post polymerization). The candidate will work closely with a monomer synthesis team and will interface with the applications group as required to perform detailed investigation of structure-property relationships. Critical evaluation and interpretation of data is required for resolution of problems at many stages of research and development. Candidate will ultimately be responsible for delivering SOPs for polymer production (gram scale) to a dedicated production team to include the development/validation of analytical methods for quality assurance. Strong oral and written communication skills are required and experience in writing SOPs and technical reports would be preferred. A proven ability to manage multiple projects and meet timelines is critical. Experience in mentoring and supervising junior staff is helpful. Experience with conjugated polymer (PPV, polyfluorene, etc.) and/or polyelectrolyte design, synthesis and characterization preferred.
Requirements:
PhD or MS with industrial experience in polymer chemistry, organic chemistry or related degree
Minimum 3 years post graduate work in the area of product development.
Skills:
polymer synthesis, polymer purification, polymer characterization, GPC, NMR, metal mediated catalysis, organic chemistry
